Democratica: Learning to See Letterforms
This project began as a self-initiated study of the typeface Democratica, focusing on understanding its structural details through deconstruction. By isolating fragments such as strokes, counters, axes, and spatial relationships, I translated typographic elements into a series of visual compositions.Rather than presenting a complete or systematic guide, the booklet operates as a collection of exploratory exercises. Each page focuses on a different letter, breaking it down into partial forms and abstracted structures, which are then reassembled into visual puzzles. Viewers are invited to reconstruct the letter by observing subtle cues such as curvature, proportion, and negative space.Through this process, the project shifts from analysis to engagement—encouraging a more active way of seeing type, where recognition is built through inference rather than direct reading.
While the current structure remains intentionally open and non-linear, it reveals both the potential and limitations of this approach. The absence of a fully guided progression highlights the importance of sequencing and learning pathways in typographic education—something I aim to further develop in future iterations.
Ultimately, this work reflects an early investigation into how typographic knowledge can be translated into visual systems that are both analytical and experiential
